Not your average bean-counters

We’re accountants who’ve built our own business, so we know what it takes to build yours.

SUMX

Why we exist

We started SumX because we were tired of watching small business owners get let down by accountants who didn’t really get them.

No plain English. No practical advice. No real understanding of what it’s like to juggle invoices, tax deadlines, late payments and long days on site – all while trying to grow a business and stay sane.

Unlike others, we’ve been there. We built SumX from scratch because we wanted the freedom to work on our own terms, and now we help our clients do the same.

So if you’re a hands-on business owner who’s suddenly staring down limited company obligations, VAT schemes, CIS headaches and confusing compliance rules… we’ve got you. You don’t need to learn it all overnight. You just need the right accountant on your side.

What we stand for

At SumX, we don’t just keep your books in order. We help hands-on business owners go from making a living to building a lifestyle.

We’re here to make your life easier

What’s the most satisfying part of helping small businesses with their finances?
The most satisfying part of helping small businesses with their finances is seeing the positive impact it has on their personal lives. Sometimes it’s as simple as helping them get organised, managing their cash flow, or setting goals they want to achieve.

What’s one financial misconception you love to clear up for clients?
One financial misconception I often clear up is the idea that having cash in the bank means your business is profitable. Many people look at their bank balance to decide if they can take money out, without understanding the full picture of their business’s profitability.

Outside of work, where would we most likely find you?
When I’m not working, I’m spending time with my family—on holidays, day trips, or taking the children to their after-school clubs. If I’m not with the family, you’ll probably find me doing something sporty like playing football, squash, or attending a regular gym class.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?
The best piece of business advice I’ve received is: know your numbers. When you understand your numbers, you’re able to make better, more confident decisions.

If you could instantly master one skill, what would it be?
If I could master one skill, it would be public speaking. I love talking—that’s part of how we build great relationships with our clients—but speaking to large audiences or at events is something I find challenging. There’s definitely a skill to it, and it’s one I’d love to get better at.

What’s the most satisfying part of helping small businesses with their finances?
A lot of clients start up their business because they are good at something or have a passion for something. Many don’t have a clue about the financial responsibilities that come with it. I think the most satisfying aspect is helping them understand what they need to do to comply with government requirements, but also to help them realise that the financial numbers and actions can help make the business more successful in the future.

What’s one financial misconception you love to clear up for clients?
Different taxes and which apply to who.

Outside of work, where would we most likely find you?
I used to play a lot of football, rugby and golf, but due to old age and a dodgy knee I am enjoying going to the gym, swimming and reading. When not doing that, I enjoy spending time with my family cycling in the lake district and together we have started a passion for short city breaks.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?
Make sure you have enough capital when you start as it might be a while before you get paid.

If you could instantly master one skill, what would it be?
Plastering or car mechanics

Outside of work , where would we most likely find you?
Outside of work you will most likely find me, shopping , at the gym, or on holiday.

What industry or type of business do you particularly enjoy working with?
I don’t really have a specific type of industry I prefer working with. I enjoy having a variety of business types to work with, as it switches things up in terms of conversations, advice and work required. However, I do enjoy working more with the clients who put in the effort to work well with us so that we can provide them with the best services we can.

What is one common financial misconception you like to clear up for clients?
The most common misconception I find is, clients not understanding the difference between company tax, personal tax, PAYE etc and who is responsible for making payment. Whether this would be the company or an individual.

What is the most satisfying part of helping small businesses with their finances?
For me, the most satisfying part of helping small businesses with their finances is, watching them achieve their goals and succeed in all aspects of the business as well as personally.

Hannah Fowler
Accounts Assistant

What’s the most satisfying part of helping small businesses with their finances?
The most satisfying part of helping small businesses is providing support which can help small business owners save their time as they have a lot of responsibilities to deal with. This can be ensuring they are organised with their financial records, being compliant with HMRC and providing clarity to any questions they have.

What’s one financial misconception you love to clear up for clients?
One financial misconception is that some directors are unaware they can be put on a PAYE scheme for their own Limited Company, so I like to explain how this works and how it can be beneficial for the company.

Outside of work, where would we most likely find you?
Outside of work, I spend my time with family and friends either on days out or going for meals.

What’s your approach to explaining complex financial concepts?
My approach to explaining complex financial concepts is to break it down into simple steps and use real life examples that the client can relate to so they have a clear understanding rather than just explaining using financial terminology that they may be unfamiliar with.
